Best ways to get rid of your electronic waste
Saturday, July 17, 2010
Electronics recycling, which is also called e-recycling, has been continuously evolving in the past few years. Electronic items are built using various materials, which include metals and plastics. Recycling of electronic goods is not as easy as simple materials such as paper and glass. However it is far more beneficial to us and more importantly, to the environment.
Every electronic item can be recycled in someway or the other. It is not easy to find an electronic item which is not recyclable. However, the complete electronic product is not recyclable, around 99%.Its quite a small amount of waste that is dumped into the earth. It is better than exposing such small amount of waste rather than dumping the whole product into the earth.
Electronics contain a combination of valuable materials. These include metals like copper and gold which are quite valuable. The materials can be easily used in the creation of new products, which reduces the cost of manufacturing as these metals are quite costly and are rapidly getting extinct. So by recycling we are making sure that the amount of energy used in producing such metals is low and we are not eating away these scarce resources.
Another important use of recycling is the threat these electronics pose to the environment which in turn affects us, the humans. There are some components of the electronic items which make it a threat, such as mercury and lead. There is a heavy impact on the earth if recycling such electronic items is neglected. Such harmful materials end up in the environment which is so dangerous for the survival of we the humans. Such a hazard can be easily eliminated by recycling. Recycling disposes off these hazardous materials quite easily and more importantly it is does safely.
There are two main ways of recycling e-waste:
Recycling Center: The number of such recycling centers has been constantly rising. Such centers collect these electronic items and recycle them properly and dispose the waste safely. It is preferable that we approach these centers when we have electronics which are not functional, rather than letting it just rot in our house.
Re-using: Re-using the electronic product is quite fruitful when the product is still functional and needs just a minor repair. This way we are increasing the life of the product and keeping it away from dumping into the earth. We can donate such products or gift it to someone who can use it.
Irrespective of which e-recycling method you choose, the final goal is that you should recycle it. Recycling may cost but it is not heavier than the price we pay for dumping it directly into the earth and exposing such harmful materials to the environment. The main purpose of everyone's life is that we are here to live and let other people live. So saving mother earth is our primary responsibility. Things which are out of our control cannot be changed. But being responsible in such small yet important things can make this earth prosperous.
